Guitar Chicago
Downbeat Magazine
November 7, 2007- Here's the the review from the November issue of Downbeat Magazine. Hope you enjoy!
3 1/2 STARS
Chicago guitarist Jason Steele has produced a standout session. Steele writes languid whole-note melodies with room to maneuver, but the ensemble never takes things too far afield. This is deliberate, studied music, perhaps a bit too much so; you yearn for the players to cut loose.
Only "Proceed To Numb" stokes the fire a bit, and it never fully ignites. Mostly, Steele leads his brass-heavy group at a measured pace, with Ron Miles featured heavily-his clear, piercing cornet lines dominate the selections to the degree that you might easily mistake this for his session. Thad Franklin also scores some rarified flugelhorn and trumpet leads, and Josh Sclar and Tim Sullivan step forward with powerful statements.
If the rhythm section doesn't jump out, it's because the slow tempos keep their contributions muted. Beauty is valued over intensity. The group seems in telepathic lockstep. The melancholy, haunting album is anchored by the 12-minute slow vamp "No Words" and the recurring theme "i." Only on the latter does Steele emerge out of the shadows. Otherwise, he lets his compositions and band mates do the talking. Such rare selflessness is one of many reasons to admire this subtle debut.

Some Wonderful Moment in the news!!!
October 18, 2007- I know it's been a while since I've posted anything, but I just wanted to pass along a few links as well as a recent review I received for Some Wonderful Moment in JazzTimes a couple of months ago. I hope you enjoy it, and be sure to pick up a copy of the November issue of Downbeat for my latest review. I'll post a link to that as soon as it's available.
Guitarist Jason Steele takes only one solo on his debut album. It's gentle, minimalist, sneaks in quietly and is gone in a flash. That says a lot about his collectivist approach, which emphasizes the organic, shifting sound of his octet as it spirals through a series of brooding, cinematic themes. Cornetist Ron Miles gets the spotlight on most tracks: He and saxophonist Josh Sclar offer introspective solos but also take things outside in some surprisingly abstract breaks.

New Music Series Offers Music With Words/Music Without Words
May 18, 2006 - Jason Steele has teamed up with one of Chicago's newest implants to the jazz/improvised music scene, bassist Matthew Golombisky, to start a new, live music series called Music With Words/Music Without Words. The series pairs up a jazz/improvised based group (music without words) with an indie rock group (music with words) in hopes of creating a unique and enjoyable experience for the audience as well as the musicians. Ultimately, this series aims to strengthen the ties between the already closely related jazz and indie rock scenes. The series kicked off at Spot 6 in Wrigleyville with a great turn out for a performance by Golombisky's 10 piece group, Tomorrow Music Orchestra, on May 17 - thank you all for coming out! On May 24 the series continued with sets from the Kyle Mann Combo and the Jason Steele Ensemble. Check the Performance page for all other listings for this series and be sure to follow the links to get more information on Matthew Golombisky, Tomorrow Music Orchestra, and the many other outstanding projects he is involved with.
Music + Flyers + Art = The Chicago Artists' Series
(Summer/Fall/Winter/Spring)
Be on the lookout for a new series of flyers/handbills for up coming Jason Steele Ensemble and Remington 2+2 performances. Each flyer will showcase the work of a specific, Chicago artist representing a wide range of mediums - from photographers to painters, sculptors, and graphic designers. The Chicago Artists' Series aims to expose music lovers to emerging visual artists while introducing those in the art world to musicians and bands that may be new to them.
If you are interested in taking part in the series please drop me a line with a brief description of your work, including a link and/or example of current pieces.
